Product Headline
Dyson has infused a number of new technologies into its Dyson Supersonic r hairdryer, designed specifically for professionals. The new dryer is Dyson’s lightest, smallest, and most precise styling tool, enabled by what the company bills as “power-dense technologies.” These include a new technology streamlined heater for precision styling, the Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor for high velocity airflow, and intelligent RFID sensors in each attachment which communicate with the hair dryer, automatically adjusting the motor and heater. Dyson created the dryer keeping in mind that professional stylists can suffer from conditions such as carpal tunnel syndrome, given that they can see four to 16 clients a day, spending up to 60 minutes styling each client. Thus, this new dryer is created to be 30% smaller and 20% lighter versus the Dyson SupersonicTM, alongside being more maneuverable, drying hair faster and promoting shiny hair.
Product description
The Dyson Supersonic™ r hair dryer is Dyson’s lightest, smallest, most precise styling tool enabled by power-dense technologies – a new technology streamlined heater, the Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor and intelligent RFID sensors in each attachment which communicate with the hair dryer, automatically adjusting motor and heater.
Dyson engineers doubled down on the core technology within the Dyson Supersonic™– particularly heater technology, motor performance, and attachments – re-engineering a machine to deliver precision for professionals in a new form factor. Dyson Supersonic™ r is 30% smaller, 20% lighter and more manoeuvrable - delivering fast drying, smoother, frizz free, shinier results.

Technical details
Precise: each part of the motor is robotically manufactured to ensure quality. Rotor Position detected up to 8000 times every second for more precise performance.
Fast drying: spins at up 110,000rpm, propelling 13.5 litres of air up through the machine and generating 3.7kPa of pressure for fastest drying.
Power-dense: at 27mm, the Dyson Hyperdymium™ motor is small enough to fit in the handle – on average, spinning 6 times faster than other hair dryer motors while up to a third of the weight.
Acoustically engineered: every part of the motor has been fine-tuned to improve acoustic performance.
Ionising technology: charged particles in the air help reduce static in the hair.
Cool to touch: with Heat Shield technology, the surfaces of the attachments stay cool. Even during close-up styling.
Weight 325gr without cable, height of 165mm, length of 390mm and width of 163.55mm
LED lights turn red to display heat settings, white for airflow settings and flash white-blue when there's no filter fitted.
Also, a yellow flashing LED light prompts stylists to clean their filter, however we encourage stylists to build regular filter cleaning into their daily routine.

What sets your product apart and why is it innovative?
By tackling problems in the ‘wrong way’ and ignoring those who say “it can’t be done”, Dyson overcame the status quo launching in 2016 the Dyson Supersonic™ hair dryer, powered by the tiny V9 digital motor, which re-thought the bulky, traditional hair dryer which was awkward to hold and damaging to hair.
Since 2017, Dyson surveyed and interviewed 696 stylists to understand their environment, habits and needs. Dyson engineers explored and addressed the challenges faced. A stylist will typically see between 4-16 clients each day, spending on average 30 – 60 minutes styling per client , adapting their angle up to 30 times during one styling session. Strain related injuries such as carpal tunnel syndrome are highly prevalent across the stylist community. These insights informed the Dyson Supersonic™ r hair dryer.
It builds on the technology and knowledge Dyson has developed, offering fast drying and styling benefits for all hair types with no heat damage.
How do you promote your product on multiple channels?
Dyson engineers continue to push the boundaries of innovation in beauty. The company unveiled the new format hair dryer kicking off from backstage at New York Fashion Week and across fashion cities London, Milan and Paris.
Cosmoprof will be the first touchpoint for the Italian audience where hair stylists can put their hands on the new technology and buy before the availability on the market in late April.
How does your product meet the evaluation criteria of its category?
The Dyson Supersonic™ r is a precision hair dryer for professional styling. Available exclusively to professional stylists.
Smaller. Lighter. Fast drying. With no heat damage.
What is you brand commitment to sustainability, ethical practices, and social responsibility? Please describe.
Dyson engineers have always focused on lean engineering: developing long lasting, high performing and efficient products which use fewer resources. Over the past 20 years, Dyson has focused on the development of tiny, high-speed, efficient motors, which take the place of the big traditional, heavy types, and are 4x faster and up to 5x lighter. This has been central to the energy reductions we have achieved in our products as well as fundamentalchanges to the format of our machines. We apply science, technology and behaviour change to drive our principle of doing more with less. The more efficient we are in terms of material and energy use, the more sustainable our products will be. Rather than adding material for strength, Dyson engineers use intelligent design and geometry to use the minimum material required. We use a process called Finite Element Analysis to redict how a product will react to realworld forces, such as vibration and heat. This method enables us to trim the thickness of plastic parts, while ensuring durability is never sacrificed. We never build obscolesence into our technology. Our machines are made of durable materials and are built to last, going through rigorous testing that is representative of years of abusive use. If they break on the thousandth test, we take the prototype back to our labs an iterate the design until it passes our durability and reliability assessment. What’s more, we ensure that spare parts are available for 10 years so that our machines can be repaired if needed, not replaced.
